Help for Improved Thyroid Function

Help for Improved Thyroid Function in Greenville SC

If you are interested in helping your thyroid to thrive and to function most effectively, it is essential that you do two things. First, you must exercise. Now don’t start groaning or dismiss the idea of exercise. Stop formulating excuses in your mind, and instead open your mind to the possibility that exercise can be enjoyable as well as beneficial to your health.

You might be saying that gym memberships are expensive and that it is just not in the budget right now, but it turns out that walking around your neighborhood is free of charge. When the weather turns bad or is too cold, you can walk indoors. There are free walking videos which can be found online and you can walk a mile in fifteen minutes.

That is very low impact, and even the most sedate person can participate without hurting themselves. If you find walking dreadfully dull, then turn on your radio and dance. It only takes a few songs to keep your heart rate elevated for the 20 minutes required to count as exercise. If you’re not a dancer, then you can always participate in activities which you enjoy, such as riding your bicycle, or gardening. You can care for your yard by mowing and raking, and care for your body as well. Remember that before you begin a new exercise regimen, you must make sure to ask your healthcare provider if you are able to exercise. Some people have bodily limitations or disabilities and their exercise must be modified. Above all, follow the advice of the person in charge of your health.

The second thing you can do to improve your thyroid function is to watch what you eat. Try to consume healthy, nutritious foods. Make the best food choices possible. This means that when mealtime comes, and you have the choice between a greasy slice of pizza or a turkey sandwich on gluten-free bread with lettuce and tomato, that perhaps the sandwich will fuel your body better than the pizza will. When snack time comes, think about wholesome options rather than prepackaged or overly processed foods. If you have the choice between a packet of potato chips, or an apple, the fruit will probably be the best choice for your body.

The same thing applies to what you drink. It’s okay if you need a cup of coffee in the morning, but later on in the day, instead of another cup of coffee or a soda, switch to water for optimal hydration. Finally, choose foods which are sources of iron and vitamin D, (such as beans and dairy) selenium and omega fatty acids (such as nuts and fish) because these foods help to boost your thyroid function. The same rule that applies to exercise applies to any changes in your nutrition. Before you make any changes, and especially if you aim to start a strict or a fad diet, check in with your healthcare provider first to make sure that the changes you are making are healthy, not harmful, for your body.
